The PORT

The Port of General Santos, also known as Makar Wharf, lies at the head of Sarangani Bay in the southern coast of Mindanao.  It is located at latitude 06˚ 6’ north and longtitude 125˚ 09’ east.

Approach

Sarangani Bay is about 16 kilometers at is widest and is about 33 kilometers long from its entrance in the Celebes Sea.  It is aligned roughly SSW-NNE and is very deep reaching 1,450 meters (791 fathoms) at its        entrance.

Wind

Prevailing wind -     approx. 3 mps (November-April) northwind approx. 3 mps (May-October) Maximum wind velocity – 20 mps (72km/hr, 45 miles/hr)

Temperature

Normal Mean Temperature 1.)varies between a high 28˚ C in April and low of 26.4˚C in July

Annual Mean Temperature          -           27.1˚C
Highest Temperature                  -           38˚C
Lowest Temperature                  -           16.9˚C

Rainfall

Evenly distributed throughout the year. Highest normal value – 39.5 mm (March)
Lowest normal value – 112.5 mm (June)

Wave

Wave situation of Sarangani Bay is 3.7 meters high with a period of 7.4 seconds.  The diffraction patter around Calumpang Point showed wave heights of 0.5 meters at the southwestern end of the wharf and 1.5 meters at the northeast end of the wharf.

Tide

Semidiurnal MHHW is 1.55 meters above MLW.  Lowest tide is 3.44 meters from surface of the quay

Currents

Outside Sarangani Bay – clockwise
Inside Sarangani Bay – counterclockwise
Current at MW is generally from northeast and is of little concern for ships approaching or berthing.

Makar Wharf

Makar Wharf is a reinforced concrete general-purpose wharf handling conventional and containerized cargo as well as domestic passengers.  Its facilities include the following:

Berth Facilities

Western Wharf               288 lineal meters (including Roro Ramp 26 m, extension berth 38 m total of 64 m)
Eastern Wharf                300 lineal meters
Wharf Extension             262 lineal meters
Roro Ramp                      9 m x 12.92 m
Controlling Draft             8.9 meters

Storage Facilities

  • 3 units transit shed with an individual dimension of 72 m x 30 m (2,160 sq. m.) total area of 6,480 sq. m made of RC frames and block work with structural steel frames
  • Chassis Storage Area     -  1,824 sq.m
  • Open Storage Areas

  • PPA Administration Building, two storey building with roof deck 10 m x 30 m, 900 sq. m.

  • North Gate/Scale House, 34.65 sq. m.

2 weigh scales (1 electronic/digital and 1 manual of 50 tons capacity)

Water System Facilities

  • 2 units deep well submersible pumps capacity 250-300 GPM, 30HP.
  • 1 unit underground water tank, capacity 205,500 US Gallons
  • 1 unit elevated water tank, capacity 11,250 US Gallons

Electrical Facilities

  • 18 units 400 watts mercury bulb, floodlights, attached outside the transit sheds, 6 units/shed
  • 07 units 22 meters high flood lighting and 2 units installed at rooftop of warehouses with average of 5 lamps/clusters – 1000 watts sodium lamp per unit
  • 25 units 250 watt lamp posts 500 KVA, 13-8KV/240V, 3 pad mounted transformer

Pump House Facilities

  • 1 unit fire pump, cap. 2,500 GPM, 220 HP driven by diesel engine cap. 288 HP at 1800 RPM
  • 2units shore-to-ship water pumps, cap 1600 GPM, 100 HP
  • 2 units transfer pumps (for elevated water tank) cap.160GPM, 7.5HP
  • 1 unit drainage submersible pump, cap.45 GPM, 1HP
  • 14 units water service supply for vessel with flanged tube water meters

Drainage System

  • 10 manholes of 1,300 mm as entrance for maintenance and repair of drainage line facilities
  • 90 units measuring 1,000 mm x 1200 mm RC as access of drained water from pavements and roadway inside the port
  • 315 linear meters concrete riprap serving as protection for storm drain water coming from outside the port
