This integration was brought
about by virtue of a Customs Memorandum Order requring all cargo handling
operators to merge into one entity, thereby pooling all financial, manpower
and techical resources and as condition for granting of loans for the
development of ports nationwide.
SCIPSI started
its operations on September 1, 1975. It entered into Memorandum of
Agreement with the Bureau of Customs to exclusively provide cargo-hanling
services at Makar Wharf. In 1977, by virtue of P.D. 857, the Philippine
Ports Authority took over from the Bureau of Customs the supervision of all
ports.
In October 1999, International
Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) and Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI)
acquired majority control of the company with a combined 71.4 % of the
issued and outstanding capital stock of SCIPSI. Both are operating the
Philippine's most modern port facilities in the Manila International
Container Terminal (MICT) and the Southern Harbor, respectively.
ATI not only lends its expertise
in operating an international port, like the South Harbor, but also lends
its expertise in handling a diverse range of cargo from containers to
feeds, from bulk cargo to fish. ICTSI has had extensive experience in
operating world-class ports around the globe and continues to maintain the
MICT as one of Asia's top terminals.
On July 9, 2008, ICTSI acquired
14.4% of the Company’s capital stock issued to certain stockholders
thereby obtaining 50.1% controlling interest over the Company.
In 2004, SCIPSI became the first
cargo handling operator in the Visayas and Mindanao to be ISO certified.
Current ISO certifications include ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS
18001-2007.
Aside from ISO, SCIPSI became the
first cargo handler in the Philippines to be certified as Investors in
People (IiP) by the People Management Association of the Philippines. Awarded in June 2009, the IiP
certification is an internationally recognized standard that helps improve
organizational performance through its people.
